Abuse
We all like to assume that we will never be the victim of abuse, in a relationship. The reality, however, is that 1 in 3 teen relationships involve violence- whether it be physical, sexual, or emotional/verbal/psychological. Just because there are no bruises on the body for the eye to see, does not mean there is no abuse happening in the relationship. Below you will find some information on these 3 different types of abuse and who to contact if you or someone you know is being abused. This information not only applies to girlfriend/boyfriend relationships, but also abuse in general- by any person. Abuse is a very serious matter than can quickly escalate and cause serious bodily injury or even death.
Different Types of Abuse
Physical Abuse- contact intended to cause feelings of physical pain, injury, or other bodily harm. For example: hitting, slapping, shoving, kicking, etc.
Sexual Abuse- forcing unwanted sexual activity on another person. Also- sexual activity with a minor, individual with a diminished mental capacity, or with a person who is asleep, unconscious, or incapacitated (drunk, drugged, etc.)
Verbal/Emotional/Psychological Abuse- any behavior that is designed to control and subjugate another person through the use of fear, humiliation, and verbal or physical assaults. Emotional abuse is any kind of abuse that is emotional rather than physical in nature. It can include anything from verbal abuse and constant criticism to more subtle tactics, such as intimidation, manipulation, and refusal to ever be pleased.
