loss
Loss is the act or process of loosing something or someone.
Sounds simple enough but it is really life altering.
As far as I can think, the only good loss is weight loss.

loss of something
Our hair, keys, or even a job- while frustrating, presents us with a challenge to overcome.

It is how we handle the change that either stifles and stagnates us, or grows and defines our character.
loss of a loved one
I watched my father pass a few years ago, after a heart attack and subsequent stroke, and am in the process of watching my mother and mother in law fight their respective battles with cancer. Loss, unfortunately, is a part of life.
The great circle of life catches up to us all. It is sad that we no longer have those we hold dear to talk to, give a hug, or kiss to but they are never truly gone as long as we remember them.

This is a little more difficult than loss of something, as it can be accompanied by sadness, grief, anger, fear and even physical symptoms. The good news, whether we like it or not, is that tomorrow begins a new day.
There are ways to help cope with loss. First being - Get support. Friends and family, support groups, church, therapy or counselors. There are many who have lost, know what you are feeling, and want to help get you through this.

Second - it is important to take care of yourself. The stress of a major loss can deplete your energy and certainly drain you emotionally. Using your support- face your feelings, express it (journal or art), and look after your physical well-being.
It does get better.
